London, U.K. – Today, the United Kingdom welcomed new leadership in Theresa May. After the U.K. stunned the European Union and World with its decision to leave the Union after 43 years, then Prime Minister David Cameron drove to Buckingham Palace and promptly resigned.

Cameron, who was expected to stay until  the Conservative Party convention in October said “I do not think it would be right for me to be the captain that steers our country to its next destination.”

May, will be the second woman after Margaret Thatcher to hold the title of Prime Minister. In her speech today after formally accepting the job from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, May said,

“If you’re one of those families, if you’re just managing, I want to address you directly. I know you’re working around the clock. I know you’re doing your best.” “I know that sometimes life can be a struggle. The government I lead will be driven not by the interests of the privileged few, but by yours. We will do everything we can to give you more control over your lives.”

May, who has served in Parliament since 1997 was once a financial advisor for the Bank of England. She quickly rose through the ranks of the Conservative Party and became the first female Chairman of the Conservative Party in 2002.

The newly minted Prime Minister has put together an interesting cabinet. Those appointed to the Cabinet were for and against Brexit. One notable face on the Cabinet is Boris Johnson, whose name was put forward as a potential contender for Prime Minister. He will now serve as the Foreign Minister according to Time Magazine.

While there is no word yet on whether President Obama or Secretary of State John Kerry have offered their own personal congratulations to Prime Minister May, the Telegraph reports that White House Press Secretary Josh Ernest said “the White House congratulates Mrs. May and expects her plans for executing Brexit to align with president’s.”
