A man was shot and killed outside his workplace in south Minneapolis Thursday morning after confronting a suspected thief, according to police.
Police Chief Brian O’Hara said during a media briefing that the incident happened in the parking lot of the victim’s workplace on the 2600 block of 32nd Avenue South.
Shortly before 7 a.m., Minneapolis police from the Third Precinct received a call for a man down outside a Cornerstone Parking Group building. Police responded to the parking lot and found the man on the ground. He appeared to have a gunshot wound to the torso and officers immediately began attempting medical aid. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Chief O’Hara said preliminary information indicates that roughly a half hour earlier, the victim had confronted an individual attempting to commit a theft from a vehicle in the parking lot.
“It appears there was a brief struggle between the victim and a suspect. During that struggle, the victim was shot,” O’Hara said.
The victim was found by a coworker about 20 minutes later. The coworker then called 911.
O’Hara said anyone with information, including any information related to thefts in the area, should contact police as soon as possible
No arrests have been made. O’Hara said police have several leads.
O’Hara said the victim was in his 40s and was arriving for the start of his shift.
He described it as “an incredibly petty and minor offense for someone to lose their life over.”
O’Hara said he’s been informed that thefts have been an issue in the area in the past.
“This is absolutely senseless and tragic for someone to lose their life over an attempted petty theft,” said O’Hara. “It’s crazy.”
