A resident of Rochester, Minn., who was out of custody in a prior serious assault case has been rearrested and newly charged with making threats to kill a store clerk in that city.
Abdirahman Mohamed Sufi, 33, was charged on Monday in Olmsted County with felony terroristic threats after police were called after 3 a.m. on Friday to the Kwik Trip on Marion Road Southeast.
According to the charges:
A store worker (identified in the complaint as the “victim”) called 911 after he heard Sufi say something to the effect of “do I need to smack you?” to a female he was with. Sufi then attempted to leave the store with some cold chicken without paying, when the worker told him he needed to pay.
Sufi went to the counter and presented two forms of ID to pay for some cigarettes as well. Sufi then became angry and cursed when the worker questioned which ID was current. The worker subsequently refused service and told Sufi to leave the store, after which Sufi threatened to “beat [Victim’s] ass.” When the worker picked up the phone to call law enforcement, Sufi said “do you wanna die?” The victim later told police he felt fear for his life.
Surveillance video obtained by police corroborated the series of events and captured Sufi saying to the female with him, “f***ing dumbass bitch,” and “I will beat your ass hoe.” The video also captured Sufi yelling at the store worker after being asked several times to calm down.
Sufi threatened to beat the worker’s ass and repeatedly lifted up his sweatshirt and threw up his hands while speaking in a loud manner. The victim called 911 while pacing back and forth, and Sufi was heard saying, “do you want me to kill you?”
Sufi made his first court appearance on Monday and was granted a public defender. He remains in custody on $100,000 bail.
Sufi also has several other pending cases, including felony third-degree assault charged in January, also in Olmsted County. Charges in that case say police responded to the hospital to interview a female assault victim who sustained facial disfigurement that required surgery.
According to the charges, the victim told police that Sufi, whom she knew as “Sav,” was drunk and had punched her more than 20 times and dragged her by her hair into a bathtub after she asked him to leave her apartment because he was threatening his girlfriend, who was also at the apartment. After putting the victim in the bathtub, he turned on the water and hit the victim again, the charges say. During the assault, Sufi allegedly told his girlfriend to sit on the bed and shut up or he would kill her.
Sufi posted $50,000 bail in that case and was released from custody a few days later. He subsequently failed to show up for a scheduled hearing, but his conditional release was not revoked when subsequent hearings were held.
Sufi has other active cases, including two DUIs, fifth-degree possession of a controlled substance, driving after cancelation inimical to public safety, and false information to police.
Sufi also has over a dozen prior convictions, including drugs and several violent felonies, according to court records.
