Minneapolis police arrested seven people following a reported burglary at the Basilica of Saint Mary in the Loring Park neighborhood early Saturday morning, but the suspects appear to have been released without charges.
The burglary occurred just before 1 a.m., according to MPD’s 911 dashboard, and a statement later released to the media stated three adults and four juveniles had been arrested.
A check of Hennepin County Jail records shows three males were booked on probable cause burglary between 2:30 and 3:30 a.m. Saturday; two were age 18 and one was age 19. However, jail records show that all three were released from custody between Saturday and Sunday afternoon. The jail records show the reason for release as “No probable cause found.”
Alpha News asked MPD for confirmation that the three released burglary suspects were the adult parties who were arrested at the Basilica, but an MPD spokesperson did not include any confirmation in a reply:
“Officers from the 1st Precinct responded to the Basilica of St. Mary’s after a security monitoring company called 911 to report an in-progress burglary. Officers arrived quickly and, with the monitoring company’s help, made several arrests.
In total, officers arrested three adults and four juveniles on charges including burglary of a business, fleeing police on foot, and trespassing. Officers booked the arrested adults at the Hennepin County Jail and processed the arrested juveniles at the department’s juvenile unit before releasing them.
The department’s juvenile unit will lead the ongoing burglary investigation.”
According to the police report obtained by Alpha News Monday morning, the three suspects released from jail were the same parties arrested at the Basilica. Two other adults are listed as arrested parties, but they apparently were not booked into jail, since their names do not appear on the jail roster. One of the names is similar to one of the three parties booked, but it’s unclear if it was the same person with two similar names listed.
Further information about the juveniles arrested was not available.
The Basilica is in the midst of a $50 million renovation project expected to be completed in time for Holy Week next year.
