Representative Angie Craig (D-MN) held her first town hall since being sworn in on Jan. 26 at Burnsville High School. Healthcare, border security, and the recent government shutdown were the main topics of interest among attendees.
The recent government shutdown left about 800,000 people without pay for their jobs. Rep. Craig stated that she has “met with TSA workers… with air traffic controllers” and that we ought to recognize “important work federal employees provide”. Multiple town hall attendees shared their own personal struggles with the recent shutdown. Yet, Rep. Craig repeatedly voted to withhold their pay despite numerous measures.
On the issue of healthcare, Craig has stated in the past that she supports a movement toward a single-payer healthcare system. Even some Democrats have distanced themselves from that proposal. She seems to be succumbing to her party influence as she now thinks we can’t “move to government-sponsored healthcare in a two year period of time”
Craig was confronted by a woman who escaped communism. She shared her story of escaping communism and her fear of America becoming an oppressive regime. “A dishonest media and powerful elected officials condemning 15 and 16-year-old boys simply for wearing MAGA hats” is not representative of a free America, she said. The woman continued by saying “these are ways communists oppress people, and it should not be allowed in America.” and asked Rep. Craig what she will do to “help protect all Americans from such horrific encroachments on our liberties.” Rep. Craig was not able to give the woman a satisfactory response.
