Senate District 54 – Cottage Grove, Afton, South St. Paul, Hastings, Newport, St. Paul Park
Leilani Holmstadt (R) has been defeated by former MN House of Representatives member, Dan Schoen (D-54A) for the Senate seat vacated by Senator Katie Sieben (D).
Dan Schoen has served as a Representative for the Grey Cloud Island Township, Newport, St. Paul Park, South St. Paul and Cottage Grove since 2012. He is also a police officer and a paramedic.
It was Holmstadt’s second time running for office; in 2013 she ran for South Washington County School District ISD 833 school board with 16 other candidates vying for five seats. She was not elected. In April, she and Afton resident Lynn Kaye asked for SD 54 delegates’ support during the Senate nominating convention. Holmstadt received the nomination with a vote of 65 – 13. Despite very little assistance from the MNGOP or the SD54 BPOU, Holmstadt ran a grass-roots style campaign and earned 46.16% of the vote in the district.
