Two videos posted on social media appear to show an apparent carjacking and possibly another attempted carjacking by the same suspect a few minutes later several blocks away in Minneapolis on Sunday afternoon.

The chaotic scene unfolded on East Lake Street just after 4 p.m. on Sunday. A Minneapolis Crime Watch page on Facebook posted about a three-vehicle crash at 13th Avenue South and East Lake Street in Minneapolis that had been aired on police scanner audio.

The Crime Watch post was updated several times with comments about another reported crash as police responded to the original crash and stated that one of the people involved in the crash was reported to have stolen another vehicle in the area of the Lake Street crash.

A video subsequently posted by a user on Twitter captured the apparent suspect as events unfolded on Lake Street at Cedar Avenue South. The video shows what appears to be crashed vehicles and the apparent suspect walking around and waving his arms. He then approaches and gets into the passenger side of a vehicle that was stopped at the corner. The female driver of the vehicle is seen getting out of the driver’s side. The woman appears to try to hang onto the door handle, but shortly thereafter the vehicle takes off with the suspect inside leaving the driver standing nearby.

Recorded police dispatch audio posted online seemed to confirm the series of events. The audio captured responders reporting the auto theft on Lake Street at Cedar Avenue following the original crash and stated that the vehicle may have hit another vehicle while fleeing westbound – which would turn out to be the crash reported at 13th Avenue and Lake Street. Subsequent dispatches several minutes later reported another crash in the area of East 38th Street and Cedar Avenue South and stated that there was a male there who had smashed out a window and was also seen hanging onto the side of a van.

Another video subsequently posted by another Twitter user appeared to capture that scene.

Approximately 15 minutes after the original dispatch about the Lake Street crashes, responders were heard on the audio indicating that they had the suspect in custody near 38th Street and Cedar Avenue. A responder subsequently told the dispatcher to make sure the EMS rig had a “cot ready with straps.”

An additional piece of dispatch audio aired after the crash incidents indicated that the suspect had possibly been involved in an altercation with security at the Midtown Exchange building on 29th Street and Chicago Avenue prior to the sequence of crashes, and that he had possibly been armed with a “switchblade” during that incident.

Another source has reported that six total crashes were involved and that the suspect was taken to the hospital following Sunday’s incidents and that the county attorney is reviewing the incidents for possible charges.
