A Minneapolis man has been sentenced to 235 months in federal prison followed by five years of supervised release for illegal possession of ammunition after engaging in multiple shootings, announced U.S. Attorney Andrew Luger.

This won’t be the first federal prison stint for Saladean Walker Salean, 52, who previously spent 15 years in prison on another weapons offense.

Salean was part of a group of offenders indicted by federal authorities in August 2022 as part of a massive crackdown on violent crime in the Twin Cities that has spanned years.

Luger noted in an August 2022 press conference that Salean had returned to Minneapolis after being released from prison, and he proceeded to obtain guns and went on a shooting spree.

According to court documents, on Sept. 23, 2021, law enforcement received a report of a shooting near 16th Avenue and Lake Street East in Minneapolis. When officers arrived, they identified a victim who was shot in the leg by Salean. Officers recovered several discharged cartridge casings that came from the gun Salean used to shoot the victim. Between Sept. 4, 2021, and Sept. 29, 2021, Salean engaged in six other assaults and shootings, one resulting in death.

Because Salean has multiple prior felony convictions, including assault and illegal possession of firearms, he is prohibited under federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition at any time.

On Feb. 2, 2024, Salean pleaded guilty to possession of ammunition as an armed career criminal. He was sentenced this week in U.S. District Court by Judge Nancy E. Brasel.

Federal inmates are required to serve a minimum of 85% of their sentence incarcerated before becoming eligible for release.

This case is the result of an investigation conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Minneapolis Police Department.
