A 16-year-old boy was fatally shot in north Minneapolis Thursday evening, and a passerby in the area was also injured during the shooting.

The Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) released the following details in a statement:

“At approximately 5:30 p.m., Fourth Precinct officers responded to reports of multiple shots fired on the 1300 block of 18th Ave N. Officers located a 16-year-old boy outside with life-threatening gunshot wounds. Despite lifesaving efforts by officers and paramedics, the boy died at the scene.

A 44-year-old man who was in the area when the shooting occurred sustained an apparent non-life-threatening gunshot wound. He left the area in his vehicle and drove to a gas station near Broadway Ave and Knox Ave N. Officers responded there and provided immediate medical aid until he was transported by ambulance to North Memorial Health.

Officers located evidence of gunfire in the street on the 1300 block of 18th Ave N.

Homicide investigators are working to determine the sequence of events that led to the shooting and whether the two victims have any connection.

MPD Forensic Scientists processed the scene and collected evidence.”

“This is another heartbreaking act of violence that has left a young person dead, another individual wounded, and families suffering unimaginable pain,” said Chief Brian O’Hara. “Our investigators are working urgently to determine exactly what happened and to identify every person responsible for this violence.”
