A 3-year-old Champlin, Minn., boy is not expected to survive after being attacked by two dogs last week in Brooklyn Park. Some outlets have reported that the boy has died.

The parents of Covil Allen are making arrangements to have the boy’s organs donated, according to a GoFundMe post by a friend of the family.

The Brooklyn Park Police Department said in a press release last week that on July 19, just before 1 p.m., officers were dispatched to a report of a dog attacking a 3-year-old child in the 7500 block of Brooklyn Park Drive North. Upon arrival, officers found two “pit bulls” actively attacking the child. Several officers discharged their service weapons, striking both dogs, killing one and injuring the other. The child was rescued by officers, and life-saving efforts were performed. The child was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital and was reported in critical condition at the time. The injured dog was secured and transported to a nearby animal care facility, where it was euthanized, according to later reports.

The GoFundMe post describes that the boy’s mother was also injured in the attack and has undergone at least two surgeries to repair damage to her calf and will need a skin graft.

Various media reports have stated that the family had gone to the Brooklyn Park home where dogs were for sale when the attack occurred.

The Star Tribune reported Friday on a search warrant affidavit which said that the dogs were described by Police Inspector Elliot Faust as “American bullies, a mix of pit bull and American bulldog.”

The affidavit described that adults present during the attack tried to fend the dogs off the boy with hammers and pickaxes.

Faust said conversations are underway with city leaders and elected officials about dog attacks, the Star Tribune reported. “It’s a problem in our community,” he said. “We had more potentially dangerous dogs this year than we did last year.”

Police have stated that an investigation into the incident is still underway and plan to present the case to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office for potential charges.

Police in Brooklyn Park responded to another dog attack of a child earlier this week, where a 7-year-old girl received superficial injuries on the 7500 block of Janell Ave. However, police dispatched the dog when it tried to attack another child while they were trying to secure the dog. That case is also under investigation.
