Minnesota Businessman Works With Trump Admin To Fight Unfair Trade Policies

A local businessman is changing trade policy with help of the Trump administration.

Marty Davis, the president and CEO of family-owned and American-made Cambria Co., has been the leading voice calling attention to China’s unfair trade policies in the quartz surface industry. In April, Cambria filed a petition with the U.S. International Trade Commission and the U.S. Department of Commerce, arguing that China was violating U.S. trade law with unfair trade practices.

According to Davis, China was heavily subsidizing quarts exports while levying 40 percent tariff on quartz imports. The unfair policies put Cambria, based in Le Sueur, in a difficult position. Last year, Cambria estimates the heavily discounted Chinese products displaced $1.2 billion worth of U.S. produced quartz.

“Cambria is taking these actions to protect free trade, our employees, along with our many fabrication, installation and dealer partner employees, and all American workers competing in our free and fair, market based economy; free trade cannot exist without fair trade,” Davis said in a press release.

Davis’ push was successful — over the last few months, the Department of Commerce has announced a series of new antidumping duties on select Chinese quartz products. In September, tariffs were increased fivefold, and even more tariffs were added in November as violations continue to be discovered.

“Commerce’s recent announcement is an important step toward restoring a level playing field in our industry,” Davis said.
