Rep. Omar spoke in Washington DC on the afternoon of May 16 saying that “we need to abolish ICE, and end all inhumane deportation and detention programs. We need to fight back against the criminalization of immigrants and those crossing the border.”
President Trump’s immigration plan, which Rep. Omar directly opposes, calls for infrastructure at 33 strategic locations along the southern border. The United States is already making headway on building the wall and should have close to 400 miles completed by the end of next year, President Trump said in his remarks on modernizing immigration on May 16.
Rep. Omar has called for ICE to be abolished since she launched her campaign for Congress, calling it “an unreformable organization” and stating her opposition to “all efforts to further militarize our border and any attempt to expand the border wall along the southern border.” She also wants to “protect Sanctuary Cities and Counties” by ensuring they receive federal funding.
Minnesota Democrats have supported measures to hand out driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants in the state and the University of Minnesota has plans to create a scholarship program for individuals who are in the country illegally but wish to attend the University. Additionally, Minneapolis has been working on a program that gives municipal IDs to illegal immigrants, which Minnesota Republicans have aimed to put a stop to.
