Two popular St. Paul restaurants have removed a burger from their menu that was named for former Minnesota Vikings star and lieutenant governor candidate Matt Birk.
The Nook and Shamrocks, operated under the same ownership, changed the name of the “Birk Burger” to the generic “Double Stack Pepperjack Burger,” according to Patch. The restaurants have similar menus and the Birk Burger was available at both locations.
Birk, the running mate of Dr. Scott Jensen, was subjected to wall-to-wall media coverage this week for comments he made about abortion in a speech on the day Roe v. Wade was overturned.
He criticized American culture for placing more value on careers than motherhood and said proponents of abortion “always want to go to the rape card.”
Of the 10,136 abortions in Minnesota last year, 44 were performed because the pregnancy was a result of rape.
“Our culture loudly but also stealthily promotes abortion by telling women they should look a certain way, they should have careers, all these things,” Birk said
A petition on Change.org asking The Nook to remove the Birk Burger received just 176 signatures. The author of the petition celebrated the Birk Burger’s removal as a win for “non-sexist burgers.”
Birk attended Cretin-Derham Hall High School, located across the street from The Nook, graduated from Harvard University, played for the Minnesota Vikings, and won a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens.
He is running for lieutenant governor on the Republican ticket against Gov. Tim Walz and Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan.
