(American Greatness) — Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. sparred with CNN anchor Dana Bash on Sunday’s “State of the Union,” repeatedly placing blame for the COVID-19 pandemic on former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director Anthony Fauci and insisting that safeguarding constitutional rights must come first in any future public health emergency. Bash herself called the interview “contentious.”
Bash pushed back, noting public health experts point to a mix of factors behind the pandemic’s death toll, including gaps in health care access and the spread of misinformation, and reminded Kennedy that Fauci also served under President Donald Trump’s first administration. Kennedy did not budge. “Anthony Fauci was mismanaging the COVID pandemic and was doing it under the Biden administration. President Trump wanted to end the lockdowns,” he said.

Asked how the country should prepare for the next pandemic, Kennedy said the last response was badly mishandled. “I mean, I think we did virtually everything wrong the last time,” he said, adding that the “primary obligation” going forward must be to “protect our constitutional rights.” When Bash noted she was asking about pandemic preparedness rather than rights, Kennedy said suppressing dissent was itself one of the biggest errors. “Doctors who are saying you’re doing it wrong were being marginalized and vilified,” he said.
Kennedy then turned the criticism on Bash and her network, saying journalists were “part of the problem.” Bash denied attacking him. “I’m not attacking you. I’m asking questions about how to prevent the next pandemic,” she said, adding that the COVID vaccine “prevented deaths” and that “there is data upon data upon data.” Kennedy was unmoved. “You are saying nonsense. You are saying something that you cannot show me a single study that says that,” he said, accusing CNN of scaring the public during the pandemic.
The conversation then shifted to the measles outbreak, with Bash asking whether Kennedy bears responsibility as “one of the leading voices questioning vaccine efficacy.” Kennedy again pointed to Fauci and the lockdowns. “The reason we’re having a measles outbreak is because of the COVID lockdowns, because people didn’t, children during that period did not get vaccinated,” he said. Pressed on camera, Kennedy voiced support for the measles vaccine, though the interview grew testy again when Bash asked about research into a vaccine-autism link and Kennedy raised concerns about Tylenol use during pregnancy, echoing remarks Trump has made about acetaminophen.
The two also traded barbs directly. “You’re rolling your eyes, Dana,” Kennedy said. “I am because I don’t want to have you use our air to say this,” Bash replied. Kennedy told her she probably did not understand the science because she is “not a scientist.” Bash shot back, “Neither are you.”
A CNN spokesperson defended Bash afterward, calling her a “veteran journalist” who “conducted a newsmaking interview,” and said the network stands behind her reporting and its coverage of the pandemic.
