The ACLU is suing to “reduce the number of people in Minnesota prisons and jails.” With the risk of Covid-19 thought to be higher in confinement, the ACLU claims that “We are running out of time.”
The ACLU is petitioning against the Minnesota Department of Corrections to release three inmates in a Moose Lake Correctional facility. The three are near the end of their sentences or at-risk, the petition also calls the release of others with similar conditions.

A prisoner in the facility, Jordan Blevins claimed that “There’s a lot of guys walking around here looking like they’re not healthy,” according to MPR.
The prisoners named by the ACLU specifically are Roger Foster, Kristopher Mehle, and Adam Dennis Sanborn. 12 prisoners were tested positive for the virus, 31 other prisoners are presumed to have it, and 11 staff are also reported to have the virus according to an ACLU news report.
“The ACLU of Minnesota is suing because the prison and DOC have failed to perform their legal and moral duty to keep the people in their custody safe,” said ACLU staff attorney Dan Shulman.
