Another mass shooting in Minneapolis left one dead late Tuesday and three others injured. It’s just the latest in a series of at least five mass shootings in the city in just over a month.
Police responded to gunfire at Bar Zia on the 400 block of South 4th Street about 11:40 p.m., according to available emergency responder dispatches and a statement later released by the Minneapolis police department. The location is adjacent to City Hall, Hennepin County Jail, the federal courthouse, and the Jerry Haaf municipal parking ramp.
One injured party was pronounced deceased shortly after responders arrived, another person was reported to be shot in the leg, and another injured party was reported to be shot in the foot. Initial radio dispatches indicated that a large fight was taking place with police officers engaged in the fights and that the scene was “not safe” for medical responders to enter.

The Minneapolis 911 incident dashboard indicated that over 45 squads responded to the chaotic scene from police precincts across the city.
A statement released by MPD Wednesday morning said that officers encountered an unruly crowd involved in physical altercations. A 21-year-old male who was shot multiple times died at the scene. A second man and two women sustained gunshot injures that were not life-threatening. Police said an altercation inside the bar led to gunfire and that one arrest was made related to obstruction. No arrests related to the shooting had been made as of the morning press release.
“This senseless violence is heartbreaking and unacceptable,” said Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara. “An argument inside a crowded bar should never end in gunfire and a loss of life. Our investigators are working to identify everyone involved and hold those responsible accountable. Anyone who knows the identity of the person who pulled the trigger is urged to contact police.”
The shooting is at least the fifth mass shooting in just over a month in the city, which began with two mass shootings the last week of August that included one at East Lake Street and Clinton Avenue that left one person dead and six injured. That was followed the next day by the Annunciation Church mass shooting that left two children dead and 21 others injured.
Two more mass shootings occurred within 12 hours of each other on Monday Sept. 15 at locations riddled with transients and open-air drug activity — one at the Metro Transit tower at Lake Street and 35W, the other later that evening at a homeless drug encampment at 28th and East Lake Street, which has since been razed. At least 13 people were injured that day between the two mass shootings.
The violence is taking place against the backdrop of local election campaigns that seek to unseat current Mayor Jacob Frey in favor of a Democratic Socialist (DSA) and further cement the DSA’s hold on the city council on Election Day, which is less than a month away. The DSA platform advocates for the defunding and abolition of police and prisons.
