The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred in St. Paul Monday evening that left the suspect deceased.

Dispatch audio at the time of the incident indicated that police had been dispatched about 6:10 p.m. on a report of a domestic assault near Earl Street and Hudson Road. A female reported to 911 that she’d been hit by a male and that the male had a warrant and was armed with a gun.

The dispatcher informed responding officers of the suspect’s name and confirmed that the suspect had a $25,000 bond warrant for domestic assault.

One officer apparently made contact with the victim and informed other officers that the suspect was on foot in the area and was wearing a Gucci backpack.

About 6:22 p.m., an officer aired that the suspect had called the victim and said he saw police in the area. An officer aired that the suspect would likely be “hunkered down” somewhere because he knew police were looking for him.

A search perimeter was established in the area and police finally aired that they observed the male running through an alley and yards with a gun in his hand about 6:38 p.m.

One officer said he heard a loud bang like the suspect may be trying to break into a residence on the 1000 block of Wakefield Avenue. Another officer aired that the suspect had been pointing a handgun at the officers.

At 6:40 p.m., the suspect was observed by police on Hudson Road with a gun in his hand. An officer aired that the suspect was pointing the gun at a vehicle and trying to carjack someone.

At 6:41 p.m., an officer aired, “shots fired.” Another officer aired that the suspect was “on the ground.”

Police immediately called for medics to the area of the St. Paul Saloon and said the suspect was shot in his back and leg and aired that he was “conscious and breathing.”

The suspect was transported to the hospital at 6:48 p.m., and a crime scene area was taped off and locked down.

The victim of the attempted carjacking was located and transported by police to department headquarters.

After 8 p.m., St. Paul police posted a tweet confirming the officer-involved shooting.

Shortly thereafter, the BCA tweeted that it was investigating a use-of-force incident involving SPPD.

In a press conference held after 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, police confirmed that the shooting resulted in a fatality and the suspect had died at the hospital.

St. Paul police public information officer Sgt. Mike Ernster said officers believed the man was going to carjack a victim on Hudson Road.

Officers drove toward the suspect and struck him with a squad as they approached. The suspect was still holding the gun as officers exited their vehicles, Sgt. Ernster said.

Sgt. Ernster stated that all officers involved were wearing body-worn cameras during the incident and said that the BCA would be handling the investigation and fielding further questions.

The suspect was not identified during the press conference.
