The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office announced on Tuesday that they had recovered a body from a pond near the Maplewood homeless camp.

A volunteer from the Wings of Hope Search and Rescue called 911 and reported that they may have found a body. Officers investigated the scene and found a deceased adult male in the water. They then sent the body to the County’s medical examiner.

“Basically the pond was very muddy, murky, lot of vegetation and overgrowth, actually has two layers of settlement, which are about four to five feet thick,” said Bradley Smith, the owner of Wings of Hope, according to MPR. “Unfortunately, the gentleman went in and it was very hard to locate him in the settlement. So it made it very, very difficult situation.”

The same area was searched on earlier that week, after officials were notified of someone going under the water and not resurfacing. Police and firefighters were sent to the scene, but they were not able to find anyone due to murky water and vegetation.

The homeless camp is located near the Ramsey County Maplewood library
