ST. PAUL, M.N. — KARE11 is reporting that the BCA has completed its investigation into the death of Philando Castile. Castile was fatally shot by Jeronimo Yanez, a St. Anthony police officer after a traffic stop in Falcon Heights, MN this past summer.
The Philando Castile case was brought to the national stage after Castile’s girlfriend used Facebook Live to record what happened following the shooting.
The BCA turned over its findings to the Ramsey County Attorney, John Choi. KARE11 reports that it could take a couple of months before Choi makes a decision on whether to indict or not.
The Ramsey County Attorney’s Office released this statement on their website about making a formal charge:
“Our office will work as efficiently as possible, while ensuring we conduct a diligent and thorough prosecution review of the BCA investigation, in order to determine what justice requires in this case. It is very likely that we will be requesting further investigation from the BCA, as is typical in these types of cases. We cannot provide an estimated timeline for our work until we review the entire investigative file and meet with national use-of-force consultants. By way of reference only, in the case of the officer-involved shooting incident of Jamar Clark in Hennepin County, the prosecution review took a total of seven weeks.”
Choi’s office also said in their statement that they would be willing to “release the video to the public once we are confident that the timing in doing so won’t adversely affect the ongoing investigation or possible prosecution.”
The death of Castile is a sticking point for activist group Black Lives Matter in recent months, with the group demanding prosecution for the death.
