(The College Fix) — Turning Point USA CEO Charlie Kirk was shot today during an appearance at Utah Valley University.

Video circulated of what appears to be gunfire during a tabling event with Kirk, the 31-year-old founder of the free-market students group.

Soon after the gunfire, attendees can be heard screaming and rushing away from the event.

“The UVU was locked down in response while law enforcement responded,” KSL.com reported. “UVU confirmed that a suspect was in custody.”

However, state officials have released a person identified as a suspect, Post Millennial politics editor Thomas Stevenson reported.

“School officials said gunshots were fired from the top of the Losee Center on campus, which is approximately 200 yards from where Kirk was speaking,” Fox 13 reported. “The shooting occurred about 20 minutes into Kirk’s speech. His condition is currently unknown.”

The university later alerted students that “a single shot was fired on campus” at Kirk, Deseret News reports.

The FBI said it plans to investigate the situation.

“We are closely monitoring reports of the tragic shooting involving Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University,” FBI Director Kash Patel wrote on X. “Our thoughts are with Charlie, his loved ones, and everyone affected. Agents will be on the scene quickly and the FBI stands in full support of the ongoing response and investigation.”

Editor’s note: The article was updated to report a suspect has been released and is not the shooter.
