Veto-Proof City Council Will ‘Dismantle’ Minneapolis Police

The Minneapolis City Council will abolish their city's police department to bring about a "police free" future.

The members of the Minneapolis City Council are making good on their vows to abolish the police in their city.

Over the last several days, prominent members of the City Council have voiced their opinion that the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) should be disbanded in accordance with the demands of protestors who took to the streets after George Floyd died in police custody. Now, a veto-proof majority of council members is ready to proceed with a plan to end the MPD by defunding it over the next several months.

The council announced their plan via what appears to be a typo-ridden text message.

The council announced their plan via what appears to be a typo-ridden text message.

“We are here today to begin the process of ending the Minneapolis Police Department,” the statement reads. “We recognize that we don’t have all the answers about what a police-free future looks like, but our community does,” the council’s statement continues.

Although the exact details of what a “police free” Minneapolis will look like, one councilman has suggested that whatever public safety entity replaces the cops will not be armed.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey was recently booed out of a rally in his own city for saying he prefers not to defund the police. However, it appears that the City Council is prepared to act without his approval. (RELATED: Minneapolis Mayor Shamed Into Leaving Rally Because He Won’t Defund Police)

A recent national poll conducted by YouGov discovered that the overwhelming majority of Americans would rather not have their police departments abolished. The Anoka County Sheriff also voiced his displeasure with the Council’s decision, warning that the consequences of eliminating the police could be dire.
