Minnesota Republican gubernatorial candidate Jeff Johnson’s daughter was killed in a domestic stabbing over the weekend in St. Cloud, Minn.

Hallie Marie Tobler, 22, of St. Cloud, died from multiple stab wounds, according to a statement from the St. Cloud Police Department (SCPD) on Sunday.

Police said in the statement that the suspect is Hallie’s husband, Dylan Michael Tobler, 23, who has been hospitalized with self-inflicted injuries.

Police responded about 8:20 p.m. Saturday to the 3100 block of 40th Avenue South on a medical emergency, an earlier statement from SCPD said.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the deceased female resident with multiple stab wounds, as well as a male who was still alive but had life-threatening injuries.

Police said in Sunday’s statement that Dylan is currently in stable condition and remains hospitalized in police custody. He will be transported to the Stearns County Jail upon release from the hospital to face charges related to the homicide.

A check of Minnesota court records shows that Dylan was just convicted late last month on a charge of disorderly conduct, which was downgraded to a petty misdemeanor. The original citation lists a charge of misdemeanor disorderly conduct for fighting/brawling involving simple assault, which occurred in mid-June 2025, but was not charged until late July.

Details in the complaint state that Dylan choked the victim, identified as the “wife” and described by the initials HMT in the complaint.

The complaint says police were called to the residence on 40th Avenue South for a “welfare complaint.” While en route, police learned that the husband, Dylan, had just left the residence in a vehicle and “wasn’t making any sense.” The victim provided information that Dylan had “psychosis,” and a history of “aggressive behavior.”

Police found a broken picture frame and shattered glass at the scene, and were further informed by the victim that she believed Dylan was “having delusions” and she was “alarmed” by his behavior.

Dylan was ultimately offered a plea agreement downgrading the charge to petty misdemeanor disorderly conduct, to which he pleaded guilty. He was ordered to pay a fine of $150. Petty misdemeanors are not considered crimes in Minnesota, therefore there was no jail time or probation included in the case’s disposition.

The Republican Party of Minnesota posted Monday morning expressing condolences to Johnson’s family for the “tragic loss,” and stated that Johnson would be suspending his campaign for governor “out of respect for his family and the enormity of this loss.”

At the time of this report, Gov. Tim Walz had not publicly acknowledged the death of Johnson’s daughter, nor made any statement of condolences.
