Multiple law enforcement responders have been on site of an active shooter situation near 27th and Nicollet Avenue in south Minneapolis since just after 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

A suspect has fired multiple rounds at officers from a third floor window in an apartment building and is reportedly holding a female hostage and possibly a child. The white male suspect also threatened that he had a grenade, according to available dispatch audio.

No officers had been reported injured following the initial reports of gunfire, but dispatches went to an encrypted channel just before noon.

The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) released a statement saying it had been attempting to serve an arrest warrant on the suspect when the incident unfolded. HCSO also later confirmed that there had been no initial injuries to officers.

According to information received from a source by Crime Watch Minneapolis, the suspect is currently on parole for weapons and may be dealing with mental health issues.

The sheriff’s office said the suspect, an adult white male, was not yet in custody as of 1:30 p.m. The apartment building was evacuated but the suspect was still barricaded inside.

In an update shortly before 5 p.m., the sheriff’s office said it was executing an arrest warrant for Tyler Joseph O’Brien, 31.

“At this time, we can’t affirmatively confirm the suspect involved in the shooting is the same person, as we have not made contact with them yet,” the office said. “Personnel at the scene are actively attempting to negotiate a peaceful surrender.”

Late Tuesday afternoon, the suspect was reported to be Tyler Joseph O’Brien, 31, who is currently on parole for a prior weapons conviction and has been a wanted fugitive since March.

Just before 7 p.m., the suspect was reported to have been taken into custody.
