Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Thursday that President Donald Trump has been banned from posting on Facebook and Instagram “indefinitely.”
Both Twitter and Facebook (which owns Instagram) temporarily suspended Trump’s accounts Wednesday evening after his supporters rioted at the U.S. Capitol.
Twitter threatened to permanently ban Trump from the platform if he refused to delete three tweets that violated the company’s “Civic Integrity and Violent Threats policies.”
Zuckerberg said in a Thursday statement that Facebook’s 24-hour ban on Trump’s accounts will be extended “indefinitely and for at least the next two weeks until the peaceful transition of power is complete.”
“His decision to use his platform to condone rather than condemn the actions of his supporters at the Capitol building has rightly disturbed people in the US and around the world. We removed these statements yesterday because we judged that their effect — and likely their intent — would be to provoke further violence,” said Zuckerberg.
The last available post on the president’s Facebook account states: “I am asking for everyone at the U.S. Capitol to remain peaceful. No violence! Remember, we are the party of law and order — respect the law and our great men and women in blue. Thank you!”
