Four young people were shot in Minneapolis Tuesday night in an incident where neighbors claim upwards of 75 shots were fired in the Whittier neighborhood. All four injured parties are expected to survive, according to police.
Responders were dispatched about 11:15 p.m. Tuesday on a report of gunfire heard near 29th and Pillsbury Avenue South, in which a 911 caller had reported hearing 75 shots fired, possibly from two shooters. Another 911 caller reported that they heard someone screaming, according to police scanner audio.
Within minutes, the dispatcher aired that people were shot in Uptown Minneapolis at Cub Foods on Lagoon Avenue. Police arrived and found two people shot in their legs.
Within another few minutes, police were dispatched to another report of two people shot at a location near 26th and Pillsbury Avenue South. Police arrived and found two more parties injured by gunfire.
Initial dispatches described the shooter as a Somali male in a black hoodie shooting at two vehicles while using a gun that had a green laser. Police also indicated that they located guns at one of the scenes.
Later scanner audio indicated that police believed the shootings were all related. Further audio indicated that all four parties were shot multiple times in their lower extremities, with one also being shot in the abdomen, and another being shot in a testicle.
Residents who live nearby posted on the X platform confirming the large amount of shots heard. One person claimed that 75 shots was an underestimate, and they thought the suspects were using automatic guns and reloading.
Another commenter said, “It really truly lasted over a full minute of shooting. I muted my TV and just sat and listened because I couldn’t believe how many I was hearing.”
I think 75 is an underestimate.
It sounded like both sides using automatic guns and reloading.

Officers went there and found two adult men with apparent non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. One man was transported by EMS to North Memorial Medical Center, and the second man was transported by EMS to Hennepin Healthcare Hospital.
Preliminary information indicates the four individuals were inside a vehicle near 29 St W/Pleasant Av S when a person walking in the area fired shots toward the vehicle, striking them. The person who fired shots fled the scene before officers arrived.
Officers secured the scene and canvassed the area.

Investigators are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
There have been no arrests.”
According to the City of Minneapolis Crime Dashboard, the city has recorded five homicides so far this year, all of them being shootings, which is two above the same period last year. There have also been 282 reports of shots fired, and 15 people injured by gunfire; both statistics are nearly on par with the same period last year. The year 2024 ended with murders and most violent crime categories up in Minneapolis over the prior year, which defied a national downward trend in those crimes.
