Here’s what we know about Ilhan Omar, the raid at her home, and allegations surrounding the congresswoman

"The documents I obtained in 2023 proved that her citizenship narrative doesn't hold water — but not a single member of Congress would listen," said AJ Kern, a former congressional candidate who has been raising red flags about Omar for years.

DFL Congresswoman Ilhan Omar’s home in Washington, D.C. was raided this morning by federal authorities in connection to an investigation into her immigration paperwork. That raid came just months after the Trump administration said it was investigating Omar.

In a statement to Alpha News about the raid, a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) said, “Today in the Washington, D.C, area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice. This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation.”

Omar has since issued a statement about the raid, saying, “I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.”

As of Monday morning, few details are yet know about the investigation into Omar and the raid that took place at her home. However, news of this morning’s raid is the latest in a string of controversies that have surrounded Omar in recent months and years.

Allegation that Omar changed her birth year

In December of 2025, border czar Tom Homan confirmed Omar was under investigation for immigration fraud, saying, “we’re looking at it.” Shortly thereafter, Alpha News spoke with AJ Kern, a former congressional candidate, about one controversy involving Omar.

According to a 2019 web archive of the Minnesota Legislature’s library of former state lawmakers from 2019, Omar’s birth date is listed as October 4, 1981. However, that birth date has since been updated to October 4, 1982.

Kern told Alpha News that Omar’s congressional staff contacted the library and specifically requested the date change in 2019. In December, Alpha News reviewed emails showing the library was contacted on May 17, 2019, by Omar’s staff and asked to change the birth year.

Speaking to Alpha News, Kern said Omar’s staff made the request “just two days after a video was published on social media pointing out that Ilhan was not 17 years old in 2000.”

Kern also explained that the change from 1981 to 1982 is critical because it would impact what age Omar was in 2000, the year her father became eligible for citizenship.

According to Kern’s website about her investigation into Omar, “Ilhan’s Oct 4, 1981, date of birth clearly corroborates that she was not 17 years old in 2000, but rather 18 turning 19. Fully two years beyond what would be allowed for naturalization through her father.”

Omar has stated in interviews that she became a citizen in 2000 at the age of 17 when her father became a citizen, and she got her citizenship “through that process.”

Along with discrepancies about the year Omar was born, Kern said she was unable to find documentation to support that Omar’s father, Nur Omar Mohamed, had actually become a naturalized citizen of the United States.

After today’s raid, Kern told Alpha News, “It’s good to see HSI and DOJ finally investigating Ilhan Omar’s citizenship. The documents I obtained in 2023 proved that her citizenship narrative doesn’t hold water — but not a single member of Congress would listen.”

“Moving forward, it’s critical that Congress verify all foreign-born members are properly seated by implementing a mandatory vetting procedure for citizenship status. Public trust depends on ensuring every member fully meets the constitutional and legal requirements of U.S. citizenship,” Kern added.

Allegations Omar married her brother

Throughout her political career, Omar has been dogged by allegations that she married her brother for immigration purposes. Those allegations date all the way back to 2016 when Omar was a candidate for the Minnesota House of Representatives.

In a 2016 article for City Journal, attorney and Power Line columnist Scott Johnson laid out many of the details surrounding Omar’s alleged marriage to her brother.

Last month, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said Omar “married her brother to try to bring him to the United States.” Omar has repeatedly denied that she married her brother. She has described the story as a racist smear.

Additional controversies

Earlier this year, Omar’s net worth became the subject of significant controversy after it was revealed that her and her current husband’s net worth was between $6 million and $30 million in 2024 due to her husband’s co-ownership in two companies.

That revelation came from financial disclosure forms Omar filed as a member of Congress. However, Omar later updated those forms to say she and her husband, Tim Mynett, were only worth between $18,004 and $95,000 as Mynett’s two companies had no net worth.

Omar’s staff attributed the massive shift in net worth to an “accounting error.”

In August, the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) arrested Abdulrahman Tulle Abdi at a Minneapolis apartment where ammunition and guns were discovered. He was later booked on a weapons charge. Alpha News confirmed Omar’s son also lived at that apartment.

Additionally, Omar’s daughter, Isra Hirsi, has become a political activist, having supported multiple left-wing causes. In 2024, Hirsi was suspended from Barnard College after being arrested during a pro-Palestinian protest at Columbia University.
