A gruesome discovery of human body parts strewn in a northeast Minneapolis neighborhood on Thursday has triggered a homicide investigation and a lot of questions.
A passerby called 911 around 9:30 a.m. Thursday to report what appeared to a human leg covered in plastic in the backyard of the Ukrainian Event Center, according to the initial police dispatch audio.
Several squads responded to the area on the 300 block of Main Street Northeast, and a supervisor was requested to the scene shortly thereafter.
Minneapolis Police Department spokesperson John Elder later said that a homicide investigation had been initiated. “Someone losing these body parts, it would not be survivable injuries,” he said.
Elder said that while police were on scene, more remains were found nearby in the area of 3rd Avenue Northeast and University Avenue Northeast. Search dogs and cadaver dogs were brought to the scene to search further, Elder said, but no more remains were found at that time.
Elder said the remains appeared to be a Caucasian male in his 30s and that the remains appeared to be “fresh.”
This is at least the 42nd homicide in Minneapolis so far this year.
Elder said that searchers hadn’t recovered “all the parts necessary” and asked anyone who may come across items that may be related to this crime to contact 911. Any others with information about the case are urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
