During a committee hearing, legislators were debating Democrat plans to include controversial legislation reducing gun rights that were inserted in must pass finance bills. One of the controversial bills is the creation of a universal gun registry also known as House File 8.

One of the possible consequences of passing this bill would be potentially criminalizing almost all private firearm transfers in Minnesota. National Rifle Association and gun rights organizations have opposed this measure pointing out that criminates do not register guns but instead will penalize and potentially criminalize lawful gun owners. One of the leading gun control groups now called Brady Campaign has openly suggested that universal gun registration is the “first step” to ban firearms.

Minnesota Democrat Rep. Shelly Christensen who is a strong supporter for reducing gun rights asked during the hearing why would anyone be opposed to registering firearms.

In a now vial moment Republican Rep. Eric Lucero responded that owning firearms is a constitutional right to protect citizens from tyrannical governments. Giving the government the power to disarm lawful citizens would defeat the purpose of the 2nd amendment.
