Republican Senate candidate Jason Lewis was rushed into emergency surgery Monday morning after experiencing severe abdominal pain.
Following tests and an examination, his doctors determined that he is suffering from a severe internal hernia, a diagnosis that can be life-threatening if not treated quickly. He was rushed into surgery, which he was undergoing as of 10:50 a.m.
His campaign manager, Tom Szymanski, released the following statement:
“Prior to being taken to the operating room, Jason was in good spirits, optimistic, and true to form. He was speculating about when he could resume campaigning, eager to continue fighting for his fellow Minnesotans.
Please join me in praying for a successful surgery and a quick and speedy recovery for Jason. Our campaign will release more information as it becomes available.”
His opponent, Sen. Tina Smith, said she and her husband are wishing Lewis “a successful surgery and a speedy recovery.”

Update 1:10 p.m.: Lewis’ surgery was successful and he is expected to be released from the hospital in the next couple of days.
“I am very pleased to report that according to Congressman Lewis’ doctor, his emergency surgery this morning to treat an internal hernia was successful and minimally invasive. Provided that his recovery continues on a positive trajectory, doctors anticipate that he is likely to be released from the hospital in the next couple of days,” Szymanski said.
“On behalf of Jason and his wife Leigh, thank you for all the prayers and well wishes that have poured in from across the nation, and let me assure you that nothing will keep Jason Lewis sidelined in his fight to protect Minnesotans from the radical left’s assault on our police officers, economy and our Minnesota way of life,” he added.
Vice President Mike Pence, who is campaigning in Hibbing, Minnesota, Monday afternoon, said he was “praying for a successful surgery and quick recovery.”
