East Central Judicial District Judge Thomas Olson denied Adan’s request for temporary release to attend his brother’s funeral.  Adan has been held at the Cass County jail since he was arrested in June 2016 in Fargo.  KARE 11 reports: “During a traffic stop, an officer smelled marijuana, detained Adan and two other men, and subsequently found various amounts of drugs and over a thousand dollars in cash in the vehicle.”

Along with the two felony drug charges, Adan has a pending appeal with the North Dakota Supreme court following his arrest in the western part of North Dakota when officers found also found large amounts of marijuana.

Valley News Live (Fargo, ND) is also reporting that Cass County Jail has told reporters that “there is an ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) detainer issued against Abdullahi Adan. An ICE detainer is a request to hold a person for an additional 48 hours after their release date in order for federal authorities to decide whether or not to take them into their custody for the purposes of deportation. Jail officials say it’s not uncommon for this to be issued against someone accused of a felony, because if convicted it could change their immigration status.”

Also reported by Valley News Live is that Adan is part of a group of Muslim inmates suing the Cass County Jail for allegedly serving them pork in their meals.  In the complaint, the inmates are asking for an apology and $100 million in damages due to the fact that Islam does not allow its followers to ingest pork.
