Kamala Harris: ‘Just wrong’ to think ‘more police equals more safety’

"We have to re-imagine safety and public safety in America," Harris said.

Vice President Kamala Harris, her conduct, and her public statements are under increased scrutiny after the San Francisco lawyer recently became the presumptive Democratic nominee for president of the United States earlier this week.

In particular, social media accounts such as End Wokeness, MAGA War Room, and RNC Research have begun to highlight statements Harris made in the aftermath of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) riots that occurred during the summer of 2020.

Speaking with late night talk show host Stephen Colbert in June of 2020, then-Senator Harris discussed the “protests” that were occurring across the country after the death of George Floyd. Harris told Colbert, “They’re not gonna stop,” referring to the “protesters.”

“They’re not gonna stop. This is a movement, I’m telling you. They’re not gonna stop. And everyone beware, because they’re not gonna stop. They are not gonna stop before Election Day in November, and they’re not gonna stop after Election Day. Everyone should take note of that, on both levels, that they’re not gonna let up, and they should not, and we should not,” said Harris.

Just weeks prior to Harris’ comments, Minneapolis was under siege after BLM protests escalated into full-blown riots. During those riots, buildings were destroyed, law enforcement officials were attacked, and a Minneapolis police precinct was burned to the ground.

Other Harris statements being circulated online include a MAGA War Room clip which shows then-Senator Harris appearing on an MSNBC program saying, “We have to re-imagine safety and public safety in America. You know, the status quo has been to determine and create policy around the idea that more police equals more safety, and that’s just wrong.”

Additionally, RNC Research drew attention to Harris’ support of a June 2020 effort by then-Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti to slash up to $150 million from the city’s police budget and direct those funds to other city initiatives.
