Keith Ellison says ‘Make America Great Again’ means a ‘return to Jim Crow’

Other top Democrats in the state have also escalated their attacks, including the chair of the state's Democratic Party, Ken Martin, who called Trump a "racist POS [piece of shit]."

Electing former President Donald Trump next week would mean a return to segregation and Jim Crow laws, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison said in a post on the social media platform X.

“[W]ho can doubt that Make America Great Again means a return to Jim Crow, pre-1950s America,” Ellison wrote.

He was responding to a rally held by Trump at Madison Square Garden in New York Sunday, calling it a “hate rally.” In another X post, Ellison shared an article that called the event a “Full Nazi Rally.”

His comments come as Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign is focused on painting Trump as a “fascist” in the closing days of the race.

Harris’ running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, also compared the Trump rally to a Nazi rally during an event on Sunday. “There’s a direct parallel to a big rally that happened in the mid-1930s at Madison Square Garden. And don’t think that he doesn’t know for one second exactly what they’re doing there,” he said, referring to a 1939 Nazi rally at Madison Square Garden.

Walz then told the crowd to “go do your Google on this.” Jerry Wartski, a Holocaust survivor, was in attendance at Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally.

“For her (Kamala Harris) to accuse President Trump of being like Hitler is the worst thing I’ve ever heard in my 75 years living in the United States,” Wartski said in a video for the Trump campaign.

Walz then doubled down on his statement Tuesday, saying, “The rally, you saw for yourself, I will let the American public make the decision about what they saw. I know what I saw and I will just leave it at that.”

Other top Democrats in the state have also escalated their attacks against Trump, including the chair of the state’s Democratic Party, Ken Martin, who called Trump a “racist POS [piece of shit].”

Madison Square Garden has been a location for many rallies and political events in the past, including for both the Democrat and Republican national conventions. In fact, MSG held the Democratic National Convention (DNC) three times, in 1976, 1980, and 1992.
