Last weekend, a collection of LGBTQ individuals gathered in Minneapolis to celebrate what they call “The Day of the Transgender Child.” Organized by a group called Transforming Families, the event’s featured speaker was DFL State Rep. Brion Curran.
A nonprofit organization that has existed since 2024, Transforming Families describes itself as a “a community where transgender, gender non-conforming, and questioning youth and their families come together to support each other in a safe, welcoming space.”
The group operates so-called “support groups” throughout Minnesota that are designed for “trans youth and their families.” According to their website, the groups meet monthly and “provide the opportunity to meet and learn from other people traveling the same path.”
While the monthly gatherings appear to be the main undertaking of Transforming Families, the organization also puts together a series of “Pride” events in June and hosts something called “The Day of the Transgender Child” in September.
Transforming Families says “The Day of the Transgender Child” (DOTC) is a “celebration” of “trans youth” that occurs annually and includes speakers, games, food, and performers.
“A growing number of drag and other performers have participated in DOTC over the years through fun events like drag story hour, live theater performances, music, and dancing,” says the organization. “We love that these performances show our youth that you can grow up to be strong, happy, and successful no matter what your gender or life journey may be.”
Last Saturday, Transforming Families hosted another DOTC at Loring Park in Minneapolis. Photos from the event show a large gathering that includes children, politicians, a drag queen, and someone with the title “Miss Trans Minnesota.”
Additionally, organizations such as Twin Cities Pride, OutFront Minnesota, ACLU Minnesota, QUEERSPACE collective, Hennepin Healthcare, and Children’s Minnesota were at the event operating booths and stands. In fact, Hennepin Healthcare’s Pediatric Gender and Sexual Health Clinic and Children’s Minnesota were “presenting sponsors” for the event.
The event’s featured guest speaker was DFL State Rep. Brion Curran. Other politicians at the gathering included DFL State Sen. Scott Dibble, DeWayne Davis, a Minneapolis mayoral candidate, and Minneapolis City Council member Andrea Jenkins. Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan was a speaker at last year’s DOTC.
