Officers with the Minneapolis Police Department were involved in an exchange of gunfire with a suspect on Thursday that left a man with non-life-threatening injuries.
Brief details were released in a statement by MPD Thursday afternoon, which said that at approximately 8:22 a.m. on Thursday police responded to the area of Logan Avenue North and Lowry Avenue North on a report of a suspicious vehicle involved in a gun-pointing incident. Within a minute, the suspect and vehicle were located. Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver refused to stop.
The statement said that the suspect’s vehicle crashed at the intersection of Dowling Avenue North and Vincent Avenue North. That’s where gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and officers. Once the shooting stopped, officers deployed less lethal munitions, described as 40mm rubber rounds and bean bags. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Recorded police dispatch audio from the initial incident captured the chaotic situation as it unfolded and seems to confirm the sequence of events. An officer can be heard calling out the attempt to stop the suspicious vehicle and the subsequent crash and then shots fired.
At some point after the shots were fired, an officer stated that squads had been struck by heavy caliber gunfire and suggested that it could be 7.62 rifle rounds and that the suspect may still be armed, possibly with an “AK47,” inside the vehicle.
A video captured by a bystander in a vehicle was also posted online following the incident.
The video captures what sounds like several gunshots being fired. A person can be seen dropping to their knees, presumably one of the police officers, who then appears to move toward the vehicles before the video ends.
A large perimeter around the crime scene was taped off into the early evening hours as the investigation into the incident, led by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), proceeded.
The statement from MPD said that no officers were injured in the incident. The identity of the injured suspect has not yet been released nor has information about any possible charges against the suspect. MPD said that the BCA would be in charge of releasing any further information as the investigation proceeds.
