Mayo-trained pathologist faces criticism after suggesting vaccine maker suppressed COVID treatment

"The average COVID-19 death age [is] 78.6. The average age of death in North America every year [is] 78.6," observes a Mayo-trained physician.

Dr. Ryan Cole

A Mayo Clinic trained pathologist suggested that vaccine makers played a role in the suppression of an effective COVID-19 treatment.

Dr. Ryan Cole is a Mayo-trained physician who has seen over 350,000 patients in his career. He also serves as the CEO of Cole Diagnostics, which has processed over 100,000 coronavirus tests. He recently said that there is an effective treatment for coronavirus that’s been overlooked, and that basic preventative measures can stop the virus from ever taking hold of a patient.

“If there’s a treatment for a disease, the federal government cannot approve a vaccine,” the doctor explained at an event last month hosted by the Idaho Freedom Foundation with the state’s lieutenant governor.

“The NIH [National Institute of Health], who is involved in approving medications, they co-hold the patent on the vaccine with Moderna. If the fox isn’t guarding the hen house there, I don’t know who is,” Cole said.

“They don’t want a therapy to work, because then they can’t vend their vaccine,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, the doctor claimed there is an effective treatment for COVID-19 that has been widely studied and that he has used personally with great success: ivermectin.

More than four billion people have taken ivermectin since it was first released, according to Cole. The doctor reports that only a handful of those patients have died from taking the medicine, and those individuals suffered from nearly unheard of genetic disorders.

Florida and Texas hospitals have seen a 70-90% decrease in coronavirus-related deaths since they started treating with ivermectin, the doctor told his audience.

Cole also aired his frustration that even though drugs like ivermectin exist, the main thrust of America’s COVID response is only concerned with treatment of seriously ill patients.

“Unfortunately, the three letter federal government agencies have practiced therapeutic nihilism, apathy, complete apathy,” in Cole’s assessment.

“These agencies tell people, ‘if you get sick [with COVID], go home. If your lips turn blue, then go to the hospital. If you can’t breathe, go to the hospital.’ When in the history of medicine have we said to someone, ‘well gosh you have pneumonia, but once you’re sick enough to be hospitalized in the ICU we’ll give you an antibiotic?'” Cole asked.

He also advocated for vitamin D as a preventative measure, adding that over 70% of the world is vitamin D deficient.

“Normal D levels decrease your COVID symptom severity or risk for hospitalization by 90%. That’s the world data now, there have been a lot of placebo controlled trials that show this all around the world — it is scientific fact,” Cole said.

“The biggest lost message on this entire pandemic is vitamin D.”

“2000 genes in your body are controlled by vitamin D, 5% of your body’s genome [is] controlled by vitamin D. It is the master key to your immune system,” Cole continued. “If one has a level in mid range you cannot develop a cytokine storm. Data shows what kills people [who have COVID is] cytokine storm. If you’re in mid-level range, you will not die from COVID because you cannot get a cytokine storm.”

Vitamin D deficiency also seems to contribute to COVID outcome disparities for racial groups and among nursing home residents, per the doctor, as over 80% of nursing home residents and blacks are D deficient.

“This should be [a] public health message from the pulpits of Washington … public health officials have ignored this critical message.”

Finally, Dr. Cole shared a smattering of other interesting claims with his audience.

First, the average age of people killed by COVID is exactly the same as the average age of death in the US. “The average COVID-19 death age [is] 78.6. The average age of death in North America every year [is] 78.6. That’s fascinating,” Cole quipped.

Second, “coronaviruses are seasonal, they follow a six to nine month life cycle and no matter what we do, they’re going to do what they do and then they’re going to fade.” Cole cited SARS and MERS as examples of well-known coronaviruses that have followed this pattern previously.

Third, Cole reminded his listeners that “there is not one study that has shown any super spreader event to have occurred outside.”

Cole was later criticized for being “anti-vax” and spreading “misinformation,” according to a local news outlet.

“I am absolutely not in the anti-vax camp, and I am concerned that these comments came across that way. I have been vaccinated. All of my children have been vaccinated,” Cole told the outlet.

“I am concerned about the lack of long-term safety data, because this vaccine is simply too new,” he added.

Health Feedback fact-checked some of Cole’s medical comments, saying there “is no reliable scientific evidence for Cole’s claim that ivermectin is effective for treating COVID-19.”

“Cole’s claim that 90% of deaths in Idaho came from those over 70 years of age isn’t accurate. According to the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, those aged 70 years old and above comprise about 80% of COVID-19-related deaths,” said Health Feedback.

The outlet also said Cole’s “suggestion that COVID-19 is a seasonal disease that will go away on its own in six to nine months, even if we don’t do anything, doesn’t stand up to scrutiny.”
