Minnesota Congresswoman Betty McCollum joined more than 30 other congressional Democrats in calling on President Joe Biden to end his reelection campaign on Friday.

“To give Democrats a strong, viable path to winning the White House, I am calling upon President Biden to release his delegates and empower Vice-President Harris to step forward to become the Democratic nominee for President,” the St. Paul Democrat said in a statement, suggesting that Harris should select Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate.

“If she becomes our Democratic nominee, Vice-President Harris will need a strong Midwestern running-mate and I encourage her and the Democratic delegates to consider a successful leader who has been a teacher, soldier, football coach, former-member of Congress, and a proven winner — Minnesota’s Governor Tim Walz,” McCollum said.

One other Minnesota Democrat, Rep. Angie Craig, has also called on Biden to drop out of the race amid continued concerns about the president’s mental fitness and ability to beat former President Donald Trump following his June 27 debate performance.

The Biden campaign said in a memo Friday morning that the president has no plans to leave the race.
