The Minneapolis Police Foundation is raising funds to send 70 officers to fallen Minneapolis Police Officer Jamal Mitchell’s funeral in his home state of Connecticut Monday.

“The Minneapolis Police Foundation is raising money to fund sending 50 Minneapolis Police Officers along with 20 Minneapolis Police Honor Guard Officers to attend the funeral of Minneapolis Police Officer Mitchell as he is laid to rest in Connecticut,” the GoFundMe page reads.

The page states that they are raising money to provide the 70 officers assistance in paying for flights, hotel rooms, rental cars, and food. The GoFundMe page explains that any additional money raised will go towards making a memorial for Officer Mitchell at the Fifth Precinct.

The Minneapolis Police Foundation was established in 2019 to support officers in the Minneapolis Police Department. They raise funds to provide technology and equipment, community outreach, and health and wellness opportunities for MPD officers.

Mitchell was shot to death on May 30 in the line of duty. Another officer was injured and two civilians were killed during the altercation.

“In a post-2020 world, against the advice of countless mentors, he decided to embrace the challenge,” Mitchell’s friend and coworker Officer Luke Weatherspoon said during a memorial service held for Mitchell in Minnesota on Tuesday. “Minneapolis needed … someone like Jamal.”
