Officer Jamal Mitchell will be laid to rest on Tuesday, June 11. A member of the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD), Officer Mitchell leaves behind a fiancée and four children.
Officer Mitchell was killed on May 30 when responding to a shooting in Minneapolis.
In a statement released via the MPD, Mitchell’s fiancée, Tori Myslajek, said, “Our family is completely devastated by our recent loss. Jamal was our whole world. His greatest joys in life were his children: Koen, 20, Jalen, 9, Kaden, 7 and little Macen, 4.
“Jamal and I created a beautiful life in Minnesota, and he was deeply passionate about helping and serving the community of Minneapolis. On behalf of our family and from the bottom of my heart, I want to thank our friends, neighbors, loved ones and the entire community for the continued support,” she said.

Mitchell joined the MPD in 2022. Last year, Mitchell was recognized for rescuing an elderly couple from a fire during his third day on the job.
The day after the shooting, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said Officer Mitchell “made the ultimate sacrifice to protect and save the lives of others. His life, his service and his name will forever be remembered in the City of Minneapolis.”
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara also spoke about Officer Mitchell, saying “he loved the job, he loved the Minneapolis Police, and he was faithful to the oath he swore unto his death.”
The memorial service for Officer Mitchell will take place at Maple Grove High School at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 11. A fundraiser has been started to help Mitchell’s family.
