Catholics across Minnesota received an email asking them to contact elected officials to demand legislation that would give legal status to illegal aliens who came to the United States as minors.

The legislation often called “The Dream Act” is getting lots of attention as Supreme Court is hearing arguments about the legality of President Trump executive order to end the “Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals” (DACA) program.

The Democrats have already passed this legislation in the US House but many Republicans in the US Senate have expressed concerns that this legislation would reward criminals with citizenship and encourage more illegal immigration.

Heritage Foundations has also expressed concerns regarding vetting of DACA recipients

In February 2017, after the arrest of a DACA beneficiary for gang membership, the Department of Homeland Security admitted that at least 1,500 DACA beneficiaries had their eligibility terminated “due to a criminal conviction, gang affiliation, or a criminal conviction related to gang affiliation.”

By August 2017, that number had surged to 2,139.

Minnesota Catholic Conference, however, argues not only for full DACA legislation but to increase immigration from developing communities to Minnesota writing

MCC supports measures like the DREAM Act, DACA, and DAPA, which aim to protect childhood arrivals from deportation while the U.S. continues to work towards comprehensive immigration reform.

The rights and dignity of migrants should be seriously considered when crafting policy. The fact that millions of people have entered our country illegally must be tempered by the reality that our immigration system is broken, and has failed to justly respond to the needs of those fleeing perils.
