Republicans in the Minnesota House of Representatives celebrated the Islamic month of Ramadan in a social media post published Wednesday morning on X.
“Ramadan Mubarak to those observing. Wishing you peace during this time,” the post said.
According to the Islamic calendar, the month of Ramadan began on Tuesday and continues through March 19. Muslims consider Ramadan to be the holiest month of their year and believe Ramadan is when the Quran was revealed to their prophet, Muhammad.
In observance of Ramadan, Muslims fast during the day and feast after the sun goes down.
The House Republicans posted about Ramadan at 9:43 a.m. Wednesday morning. A graphic accompanied the post which had images of minarets, crescent moons, and said “Ramadan Kareem.” In English, that phrase encourages people to have a “blessed Ramadan.”
In the hours after the House Republican issued their Ramadan message, the post received an overwhelmingly negative response from commenters.
“F*** this bull***t,” one commenter said. “This is why Republicans in Minnesota are just a pack of RINO losers. We don’t vote for you because we see no difference in you or the Democrats. Just two shades of the same s**t pile. Why vote?”
“This is why people are against the GOP,” another reply said.
Former Republican State Rep. Tim Miller was also critical of the post, saying, “This is a tone deaf, solicitous post. Bad decision making by whoever thought this was a good idea.”
“Seriously?!?!” wrote another commenter. “How tone deaf can you be?”
Many of the replies to the GOP’s Ramadan post noted that Wednesday was Ash Wednesday, the day which marks the beginning of Lent for many Christian denominations.
Later that day at 10:07 a.m., and then again at 11:40 a.m., the Republican Caucus did publish social media posts about Ash Wednesday on X. However, replies to those posts noted that the Ramadan message came before the two posts about Ash Wednesday.
“This is what you should’ve posted first!” one commenter wrote in response to one of the Ash Wednesday messages.
“Not before mentioning the fake holiday Ramadan,” wrote another.
Alpha News reached out to the House Republican Caucus to ask who approved the social media post celebrating Ramadan.
However, the caucus did not respond to a media inquiry. The House Republican Caucus is led by House Speaker Lisa Demuth, a current candidate for governor of Minnesota.
