Minnesota priest: Now is the time for ‘indignation,’ not fear

“You and I now have a situation where the brick has already been flung through our front window. Our response must be a cry of defiance and not of fear.”

Fr. Thomas Dufner

Fr. Thomas Dufner implored his congregation to be filled with indignation, not fear during a recent homily.

The scriptures state that a “great number of wise men is the blessing of any nation,” and reveal that wisdom comes “from communion with God,” said Dufner, pastor of the Church of the Epiphany in Coon Rapids, Minnesota.

“Evidently, wisdom is much lacking today. We see that all around us. We see that in the press. Perhaps most clearly we see it in the last few weeks in terms of the election. There’s been a great lack of wisdom,” he said.

Dufner said the changes that were made to the country’s elections system this year spell “disaster for the honesty of the vote.”

“The results of this presidential vote, sadly, look very sketchy. I don’t know anymore than you do, but I find the results troubling. Mail-in ballots sent out to people without their request. Now you’re always able to request a ballot, you’re always able to ask for an absentee ballot, but ballots were sent out to people who made no request, without any identification, without any signature, to people who no longer live in the residence and to people who have died,” he said.

“We’ve had four years to prepare for this election. We’ve had months to ask for an absentee ballot and now to be stretching the date — something just doesn’t sound right here,” Dufner continued. “There is a political party that stands for, unapologetically, the fundamental right to kill a baby. Would they cheat?”

Dufner also discussed the wave of riots and violence sweeping the nation. He quoted a Catholic writer who lives in Milwaukee and had her home broken into during a period of unrest.

“They asked, ‘did you feel afraid?’ She said, ‘No, I felt indignant.’ That’s the right attitude. Not fear, indignation. That’s the American value. Indignation at something that is entirely off the rails,” Dufner said.

“You and I now have a situation where the brick has already been flung through our front window. Our response must be a cry of defiance and not of fear.”
