For the past 10 years, students and faculty have gathered to adorn the entrance and walkways of Providence Academy with 2,977 American flags, one for each person who was tragically killed in the terrorist attacks that took place on September 11, 2001.
On the anniversary of this day, all students, faculty, and staff line up along the front entrance and hold hands over their hearts as the City of Plymouth Police and Fire Departments process through the school parking lot. The event has grown so much over the years that current and alumni families have started participating in the ceremony as well, congregating alongside students and staff.
School headmaster Dr. Todd R. Flanders said, “September 11 is forever marked as a tragic day in our nation’s modern history. All of our students were born after the terrorist attacks took place so the tribute is our way of educating them about our past, honoring the memory of the people whose lives were tragically taken that day and recognizing the heroism and bravery of the men and women who serve as first responders in our local community. They put their lives on the line every day and defend not only lives but noble principles on which our country is founded upon, and this tribute shows them gratitude and helps instill important virtues in the next generation.” The annual flag display was initiated by the school’s “Lions for Life” club. The City of Plymouth Police and Fire drive-through began with an impromptu decision of those departments on the morning of September 11, 2015. That spontaneous event has evolved into a moving tradition.
