Things got intense at the Minnesota Capitol when Sandy Melville spoke about how her opposition to Marijuana is based on her losing her son in a fatal car accident caused by the inebriated driver. Pro-Marijuana protesters attempted to shut down her testimony as Melville spoke.
The momentum to legalize recreational marijuana in Minnesota continues to gain steam. A new pro-legalization group was launched with influential Republicans and Democrats on the steering committee. Democrats include Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and influential lobbyist Sarah Walker. Former Republican elected officials Dario Anselmo and Brandan Peterson are also listed on the steering committee.
Anti-legalization group Smart Approaches to Marijuana Minnesota tried to stall the momentum by holding a press conference. Speakers against Marijuana included Dakota County Sheriff Tim Leslie and a victim of someone who was operating a vehicle while under the influence of Marijuana.
Speakers pointed to data that use of marijuana by teens and young adults skyrocketed in states where Marijuana was legalized.
The press conference quickly turned into a shouting match and marijuana supporters cat called and mocked the presenters.
Dakota County Attorney Jim Backstrom and Dakota County Sheriff Tim Leslie forcefully oppose legalization of recreational marijuana. Supporters of legalizing continually catcall and mock them and others while they speak. Just the start of what promises to be a divisive debate. pic.twitter.com/3aBt1DEDpT
