Post-election poll: Walz did not help Harris in Minnesota

Only 23 percent said having Walz on the ticket made them more likely to support Harris.

(Center of the American Experiment) — Results from the Thinking Minnesota post-election poll show that having “favorite son” Tim Walz on the national Democratic ticket did not influence most Minnesota voters. Only 23 percent said having Walz on the ticket made them more likely to support Harris while 24 percent said it made them less likely. Perhaps the most damning number is the 53 percent of Minnesota voters who said choosing Walz made no difference at all on their decision to back Harris or Trump.

Walz did not perform as well as former Minnesotans and vice-presidential icons Hubert Humphrey and Walter Mondale when they were on the national ticket. In fact, Minnesota was the only state to support Mondale over Ronald Reagan in the 1984 presidential election.

“After six years of lazy coverage from the local press, Minnesotans were finally exposed to the inconvenient truths of the governor’s record and his habitual untruthfulness when speaking about his past,” said John Hinderaker, president of Center of the American Experiment. “Walz had a neutral impact on the Harris ticket in Minnesota and, in the process, damaged his reputation with home-state voters.”

The quarterly Thinking Minnesota Poll is sponsored by Center of the American Experiment and conducted by Meeting Street Insights, a nationally recognized polling operation based in Charleston, S.C. Interviews were completed November 18-21, 2024, among 500 registered voters in Minnesota who voted in the Nov. 5 election using a mix of cell phone and landline interviewing. The margin of error is +-4.38 percent.

Full results of the poll will be published in the January issue of Thinking Minnesota magazine.
