2020 Democratic Presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg stated that he doesn’t read or like LGBT media anymore, since “it makes him feel like he can’t be himself.”
Buttigieg has begun to be chided for not fully following the ideological pied piper. The 2020 hopeful is open about his homosexuality and yet has said, “I just am what I am, and, you know, there’s going to be a lot of that. That’s why I — I can’t even read the LGBT media anymore, because it’s all, ‘he’s too gay, not gay enough, wrong kind of gay,’” Buttigieg said on a radio interview on The Clay Cane Show.
Mayor Pete has found a sense of freedom after he has “allowed [himself] to be [himself]” and not to let other people speak into his identity.
The Huffington Post has stated that Buttigieg’s candidacy is revealing tension between gay white men and other queer people. David Johns, executive director of the National Black Justice Coalition, said, “we need to pause to think about not only how gayness exists as a political identity for gay white men, but how LGBTQ gains [as a whole] have worked for them over the last few years.”
Johns goes on to say that “not only is the world set up to benefit [gay white men], but shifts in political and social environments have allowed them to enjoy additional privileges.”
This impossibility of being “good enough” is symptomatic of a purity-spiraling cult that eventually devours itself. The consuming cycle repeats over time: Robespierre cast to the guillotine in his own Revolution, Trotsky at the hands of his fellow Soviets, and even Obama by the 2020 candidates. And now Pete Buttigieg.
