Democrat State Senator John Marty has introduced legislation that would require Minnesotans to wear masks in public spaces.
Marty has said that the restriction would not require heavy enforcement, and though many would be against it, most people are reluctant to break the law. In his announcement of the legislation, he cited a study from the University of Washington that projected if 95% of Americans wore masks in public areas, Covid-19 deaths would drop by 45,000 by November 1st.
“Unfortunately, some have politicized this issue. Let’s be clear: Refusing to wear a mask is not a sign of toughness, it’s a sign of rudeness. After all, public health officials say that the main benefit of wearing a mask is to protect those around us, not ourselves,” said Marty.

Sen. Marty has said that he would like Governor Walz to create a face mask requirement, but introduced the legislation himself because other Senators have been “unfairly critical” of Walz.
The Governor has recently said that he would like to create a mask order but is waiting for more Republicans to “buy-in” to the idea according to MPR.
