Rep. Tom Emmer: Minnesotans deserve the full benefits of the Working Families Tax Cuts

"Here in Minnesota and blue states across the nation, Marxist, Democrat politicians have prevented millions of Americans from taking advantage of this life-changing legislation," writes U.S. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer.

On November 5, 2024, the American people elected a Republican House, Republican Senate, and President Donald J. Trump with a mandate—a mandate for change. Four years of disastrous Bidenomics had Americans feeling the strain of higher prices, falling wages, and record inflation. To put it plainly, President Trump and Republicans were handed an economy in ruin, and we’ve worked hard to build it back—brick by brick.

The cornerstone of our efforts was the historic Working Families Tax Cuts signed into law by President Trump nearly one year ago today, July 4, 2025.

Despite every single Democrat in Congress voting against this bill, millions of Americans are feeling unprecedented relief from Republicans’ once-in-a-generation bill. It put money back into the pockets of millions of hardworking Americans. President Trump and Republicans eliminated taxes on tips and overtime, permanently increased the Child Tax Credit and the Standard Deduction, provided much-needed tax relief for small businesses, and much more.

Americans have already begun to see the benefits of this monumental legislation. This tax season, more than 53 million filers claimed at least one of the new tax cuts from this landmark legislation. That’s nearly 45% of all filers taking advantage of provisions to keep more of their hard-earned money in their pockets.

But as we celebrate these wins, larger refunds, and smaller tax bills, here in Minnesota and blue states across the nation, Marxist, Democrat politicians have prevented millions of Americans from taking advantage of this life-changing legislation.

Under state law, Minnesota does not automatically conform to the federal tax code. Rather than allowing law enforcement, first responders, waitresses, and service workers to take advantage of no tax on tips and no tax on overtime, Walz and the DFL state politicians blocked these key provisions of the Working Families Tax Cuts from going into effect in our state. Tens of thousands of tipped and overtime workers in Minnesota stood to keep more of their hard-earned pay thanks to the Republicans’ Working Families Tax Cuts, but just like the Democrats in Congress, Democrats in Minnesota voted against the interests of American families. A typical family of four in Minnesota could have seen a higher take-home pay of about $7,700 to $11,100 thanks to the bill.

Tim Walz and his leftist, Marxist supporters in the Twin Cities are so blinded by their Trump Derangement Syndrome that they’re hurting Minnesotans and jeopardizing the economic future of our state. Minnesota is already one of the highest-taxed states in the country. By failing to adopt the Working Families Tax Cuts fully, Walz and Democrats are further increasing Minnesotans’ tax burden.

Among the states with higher personal income tax rates than Minnesota, only California and New York have also failed to fully implement the Working Families Tax Cuts. Both California and New York have seen an exodus of high-income individuals to lower-tax states. And it’s not just individuals leaving these Democrat-run, overtaxed states; it’s businesses too. These are not the states we should be modeling ourselves after.

So, why are Tim Walz and Minnesota Democrats refusing to adopt the federal tax code? I can only assume they want to pour more of Minnesotans’ hard-earned money into fake Somali daycares and fraudulent school lunch programs.

If the recent fraud scandals in Minnesota have taught us anything, it’s that Tim Walz and state Democrats cannot be trusted to safeguard taxpayer dollars. Under the Walz Administration, as much as $9 billion in taxpayer funds have been stolen by fraudsters. I am confident the average Minnesotan is a better judge of how to spend their tax dollars than our current Governor.

Through the Working Families Tax Cuts, President Trump and Republicans delivered historic wins for the American people, and it is unforgivable that Walz and his Marxist friends in the state legislature have prevented Minnesotans from the full benefits of this transformative legislation.
