Republicans now hold lead over Democrats in high-stakes race for Minnesota House

The poll shows Republicans leading amongst suburban voters.

A new poll released by KSTP and SurveyUSA says Republicans hold a slim lead over Democrats in the 2024 race for the Minnesota House of Representatives.

According to the new poll, 45% of respondents said they are “generally more inclined” to support Republicans while 44% said they are “generally more inclined” to support Democrats. Meanwhile, 8% of respondents are “undecided.”

These numbers represent a dramatic shift in public sentiment regarding the race for the Minnesota House. Just weeks ago, a KSTP/SurveyUSA poll had Democrats leading Republicans in the race for the Minnesota House by a margin of 46-41.

Additionally, KSTP’s most recent poll shows Republicans leading amongst suburban voters and young voters.

For poll respondents who live in the suburbs, 45% said they are more inclined to support a Republican candidate while 42% said they are more inclined to support a Democratic candidate. For poll respondents ages 18-34, 56% are inclined to support a Republican while 34% are inclined to support a Democrat.

This massive 22-point Republican lead with young voters is just one of many fascinating results from the new poll. As a matter of fact, Republicans also lead with voters ages 35-49 and 50-64. Meanwhile, Democrats lead with voters ages 65+.

According to KSTP’s poll, Republicans have a 15-point lead amongst men while Democrats have a 14-point lead amongst women. Republicans also have a 13-point lead with voters who are parents; Democrats have a four-point lead with voters who are not parents.

In response to the poll, House Minority Leader Lisa Demuth, R-Cold Spring, said “Minnesotans know that one-party Democrat control has made their lives more expensive, and that we need balance back at the Capitol.”

“These poll results are incredibly encouraging and are the latest sign that Minnesotans are ready to restore balance at the Capitol this fall,” the Republican leader added.

Minnesota Republican Party Chairman David Hann also commented on the poll’s findings.

“This is a clear indicator that the people of Minnesota are resonating with the values and policies the Republican Party stands for,” said Chairman Hann. “Our message of responsible governance, economic prosperity, and community safety is hitting home with voters.”

If Republicans flip just four seats in the Minnesota House of Representatives, they will win a majority in that chamber for the first time since 2016. Currently, Democrats control the governorship, the House of Representatives, and the Senate. Neither the Minnesota governorship nor the Minnesota Senate are on the ballot this November.

KSTP and Survey USA’s most recent poll was conducted between April 3 and April 7. The poll has a sample size of 608 “Likely November Voters” and has a 4.9% margin of error.

For the 2024 presidential race in Minnesota, a KSTP/SurveyUSA poll released on Tuesday shows Donald Trump and Joe Biden in a close contest. Biden leads Trump by just two points (44% to 42%). Meanwhile, 11% of respondents said they will vote for another candidate while 4% are undecided.
