Riley Gaines, Michael Alfonso to speak at New Richmond rally amid controversy over boys in girls’ bathrooms

"Prioritizing the feelings of a tiny minority over the safety, privacy, and dignity of every girl is not compassion—it’s reckless, unjust, and wrong," said congressional candidate Michael Alfonso.

Turning Point Action and Moms for Liberty are set to host a town hall Aug. 4 just across the border in New Richmond, Wis., in support of protecting and defending young women and girls.

According to organizers, the event will feature former collegiate swimmer Riley Gaines, Wisconsin GOP U.S. House candidate Michael Alfonso, Moms for Liberty activist Scarlett Johnson, and local student Ella Frei.

Gaines, a former University of Kentucky swimmer, gained national attention in 2022 after competing against transgender swimmer Lia Thomas at the NCAA championships. Since then, she has become an advocate for policies that restrict biological males from competing in women’s sports.

Gaines attended a rally Sunday at Target Center in Minneapolis ahead of a Minnesota Lynx-Indiana Fever game in support of Sophie Cunningham, who recently spoke out against men in women’s sports.

Alfonso is a Republican candidate running for Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District. He has campaigned on issues including parental rights and protections for women and girls. His campaign received an endorsement from President Donald Trump, as well as several congressmen and organizations.

The rally comes in response to concerns over New Richmond High School allowing biological boys to access girls’ bathrooms. A lawsuit that was filed in April said the district’s policy has “resulted in at least one biological male being present in the girls’ bathrooms while biological girls were present, causing anxiety and stress for the girls.”

The U.S. Department of Education has also launched an investigation into the district.

During an interview with Moms for Liberty, Alfonso said he believes the issue requires national attention and that the event is intended to demonstrate public support for changing current policies.

“We have common sense on our side, and we’re going to be having this rally to show everyone just how much everyone in Hudson and the state of Wisconsin agree,” he said. “We need to protect women. We’re not protecting some crazy notion of women; anyone can be a woman. We are protecting women, as God made them.”

Alfonso said becoming a father has made the issue especially personal.

“I recently became a father—a proud girl dad,” Alfonso said in a statement provided to Alpha News. “My daughter is still a baby, and she can’t speak for herself yet, but I can. My job is to protect the spaces reserved for her sex and keep them safe and private.”

He emphasized the importance of addressing New Richmond’s policies, saying that “prioritizing the feelings of a tiny minority over the safety, privacy, and dignity of every girl is not compassion—it’s reckless, unjust, and wrong.”

“As Wisconsin’s 7th District’s next Congressman, I’ll always fight to protect not only my daughter, but every girl. I’m honored to be joined by Riley Gaines and Ella Frei in standing up for women and girls and calling attention to the radical Left’s attacks on their rights,” he added.

Frei, a senior at New Richmond High School, told Moms for Liberty that she has been speaking out against her school’s policy because she doesn’t want other girls “to have to go through what I had to go through.”

“I don’t want them walking in one day and being surprised that there’s somebody in your bathroom that’s not supposed to be there,” she said. “I think if we don’t speak out then it’s just going to get worse.”

Tuesday’s town hall will take place at 6 p.m. at Riverbend at River’s Edge.

“Girls deserve privacy, safety, and dignity in their own bathrooms and locker rooms, and no school policy should ever strip that away from them,” Tina Descovich, CEO and co-founder of Moms for Liberty, said in a statement.

“The New Richmond school district has decided that the feelings of adults pushing an ideology matter more than the safety of the girls in their care, and parents are not going to stand for it. We will keep showing up until this district, and every district, puts the protection of our daughters first.”
