“Sorry for all this debt, sorry for the healthcare system we’re leaving you, and sorry for the division in our country”. I found myself using some of these statements to start my classes at North Central University last fall. My students never seemed to think these statements were funny. Then one day I realized, why don’t I do something about the problems. We all like to bemoan the status of politics in our country, After months of soul searching, I felt the call to take action.
My name is Rob Barrett, Jr., and I am running in 2020 to be your United States senator. I am a husband, a father, a professor, a musician, and a Minnesotan. I am passionate about Minnesota and about fixing the problems our nation and state face. We need fresh faces and creative ideas for our country’s problems.
First, we need to fix the healthcare system. Having been in and out of the emergency room last year, (appendicitis) I saw firsthand some of the issues and problems our healthcare system deals with. My plan is to make healthcare portable, affordable and accessible by increasing HSA use and availability, encouraging modernization and innovation, and decreasing system inefficiencies.
Secondly, we can easily provide education opportunity and reduce education debt by taking our Minnesota post-secondary education option (PSEO) nationwide. This successful program allows high school juniors and seniors to attend college free of charge and proves beneficial to the student as well as to the university. This program also applies to technical schools. As a college professor, I only see two types of students in Minnesota – those who did PSEO and those who wish they had.
My third priority is to stop the increasing national debt. We need to adjust the mandatory increases in the entitlement parts of the budget and slow our overall spending until it aligns with our income. Twenty-two trillion in debt is enough. We need to have serious conversations about this going forward.
